Reflection
A. What new and interesting content did you learn from this project?
While completing this project I have learned so much about Lake Norman. I knew that the lake was man made, but I didn't know why the lake was built. While researching for this project I learned that the lake was built to provide the area with hydroelectricity, a cheaper and more efficient power source. I also learned about the East Monbo mill and that it was located near my house. I have grown up in the same house and never knew about the mill and all of the history surrounding it. I have learned basically everything that is included in
my Lake Norman project. I have found the history of Lake Norman to be very interesting because I have always lived by the lake and have taken it for grated. Before beginning this project I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to find a lot of history around Lake Norman. But after a hour or two of researching I was amazed at the history I found in my backyard.
B. Explicitly share how the content connects with National and State Standards.
This content relates to the third grade standard:
3.H.1.1 Explain key historical events that occurred in the local community and regions over time.
There are several historical events that have happened in and around Lake Norman. One of the earliest events would be the Catawba Indians settling in and around the Catawba River. Another historical event that happened at Cowans Ford, near Davidson, is a battle in the American Revolution between General Davidson and General Green. We will never know, but this battle had to potential to change the outcome of the American
Revolution.
C. Communicate how what you have learned from creating the project will be of value
as an elementary Social Studies teacher.
I have learned that there is a lot of history in my home town about Lake Norman. As a future Social Studies teacher, I want to show my students that history is everywhere, even in their community. I will show then that history relates to them and isn't something that has happened in the past and doesn't need to be remembered. Our community was located on the World’s most electrifying river (Gleasner & Gleasner, 1986). Hydroelectricity had been practiced on a small scale in other areas, but the Duke Brothers saw the potential and really expanded then idea; creating the largest manmade lake in the Carolina's. My goal as a future Social Studies teacher is to show my students that Social Studies relates to them and historical events have happen in our own community.
